After several acclaimed releases on the Night People and Crash Symbols labels, hotly- tipped Atlanta-via-Brooklyn duo Featureless Ghost return with this white label (limited to 300 copies and including Scott Fraser and Beau Wanzer remixes), to be released on the newly forged CGI imprint.
With influences spanning synth-pop, new wave, industrial and techno, band members Elise Tippins and Matt Weiner blend analogue and digital electronics with their inimitable back- and-forth vocal delivery.
Taken from their 2012 debut LP Personality Matrix, the sombre cyber-pop of lead track “Sugarcoated” exemplifies the sound for which Featureless Ghost have become known; their sung exchanges adding the only human touch while expertly programmed synths dance above intricate electro drum machine rhythms. Album cut “Cybosapien” is a more heads- down affair with an early Detroit techno feel, all warped robotic voices and darting synth work.
Remixes come from UK techno veteran Scott Fraser (Crimes of the Future / World Unknown) and Chicago’s Beau Wanzer of Mutant Beat Dance / Streetwalker fame. Scott Fraser teases out the vocals from “Sugarcoated” over slicing electro hats and hypnotic arpeggiated synths, transforming the track into a brooding dancefloor weapon. Meanwhile Beau Wanzer reworks previous single “Flash” into a thrilling, high-pressure barrage of relentless, hammering distorted drums and growling synths, all the while keeping Tippins’ vocals centre stage.

All the tracks are great but Stepper is the standout for me! pounding syncopated kicks, rolling handdrums and playful sample work, dancefloor destroyer. Jack G.

Techno is about pulling a feeling. Ulysses nailed it. Looking forward to playing the red cut vinyl. Thanks in advance for making my sets a better soundscape. Michael Horodnicki
